Cultivating Community & Job Skills through Plants

plant. grow. thrive.

Who We Are

Hort | Culture is a non-profit job training program supporting young adults aged 18-24 overcoming homelessness in the Bay Area. Together with our official partner, Covenant House California, we’ve provided paid internships to young people in the shelter system since the summer of 2020. Our interns run our small business selling plants, plant-related merchandise, and 3D printed pottery, while gaining real-world workplace skills and exposure to business software and principles.

What We Do

We’re here to build an “economy of care” which honors each intern's unique skills and contributions to the business. Through interactions with plants and access to creative and therapeutic outlets, we also aim to promote improved mental health. Our goal is to expand our program to offer more job training opportunities to young adults in the shelter system and support them in taking the first step towards the future of their dreams.

Support us by buying merchandise, attending events, or donating to our cause. Your contribution helps us sustain our operations and expand our outreach to the community. All donations go through our partner, Covenant House California.

Laney College Partnership Launched!

As part of Hort | Culture's internship program, youth learn Potterware, a cutting-edge 3D printing software developed by Oakland-based Emerging Objects, which offers youth an introduction to careers in tech. We encourage interns to design and fabricate their own unique pieces to complement our plants and be sold at our storefront.  Thanks to a partnership we launched in the fall of 2023 with Laney College's Art Department, interns can now expand their technical skill set by enrolling in ART 466C, an Occupational Work Experience Class.  Not only does this collaboration scale-up Hort | Culture’s 3D printing operation, it integrates interns into the Laney community and breaks down many of the barriers associated with entering the community college system, by offering them enrollment support and transferable general education credit applicable to any degree.
